On Friday, the Russian Information Agency, citing the Ukrainian Atomic Energy Ministry, reported that a power generation unit at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest of its kind in Europe, was hit during an attack on it, and that part of the plant was on fire.

"Firefighters are unable to start extinguishing the fire at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, and are under fire at close range. The first power unit has already been hit," the agency quoted the ministry as saying.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba appealed on Friday to the Russian forces to stop bombing the Zaporizhia nuclear plant, after a fire broke out in this largest station ever in all of Europe, warning of an unimaginable catastrophe if it exploded.

"If it explodes, the explosion will be ten times bigger than Chernobyl! The Russians must stop the bombing immediately," the minister said in a tweet on Twitter.

In addition, the Associated Press quoted an unnamed Ukrainian government official that high levels of radiation were detected at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
