At the end of February, the atmosphere of the UAE is exposed to the phenomenon of “old man’s cold”, which are days of strong wind and cold following a period of warmth because of which people think that winter has passed and the warmth has accepted, so the cold strikes them. Therefore, it is known to the people of the Gulf as “the seller of his garments” a metaphor for the one who sold his cloak under the suspicion of him. With the end of the time of cold, or “days of hosoom” for some Arabs, which are decisive or separating between the time of cold and the time of heat, and “the cold of the shawl” according to the people of agriculture, and the shawl is one of the stars of Scorpio.

Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, a member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, says that the old man’s cold “means the inability of winter or that it is at the end, and it consists of eight days at the end of winter, specifically the last four days of February and the first of March, and it may extend to the 10th of March.” So the period of "old man's cold" extends from February 25 to March 10.

The “old man’s cold” period is characterized by the arrival of a cold wave that may be accompanied by the activity of cold winds called “Al-An’ayat”, meaning mourning the departure of the winter season, and it is the last cold wind during the winter. Usually this period is preceded by a rise in temperature, but it is a “deceptive and temporary” rise, as some think that the cold It has ended, but it attacks again, accompanied by cold northwest or northeast winds.
