UAE issues New regulations for fishing in popular area

On Wednesday, the Ruler of Sharjah and Supreme Council Member Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi approved new fishing restrictions that pertain especially to Kalba. A number of measures intended to regulate fishing activities in the area are laid forth in Administrative Resolution No. (2) of 2024 AD.

Wednesday saw the release of new fishing laws in Kalba, which provide fisherman working in the area clear instructions. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah and Supreme Council Member, issued Administrative Resolution No. (2) of 2024 AD, which specifies the regulations for fishing in Kalba.

One significant provision states that fishermen are permitted to navigate only through designated routes to access their fishing spots. They are strictly prohibited from traversing through areas marked as off-limits, which are demarcated by floating signs or buoys.

Furthermore, the regulations dictate that fishermen are not authorized to export their catch or sell it outside of Kalba. However, they are permitted to showcase and sell their catch within the markets of the city, adhering to the prescribed guidelines. These measures aim to ensure the sustainable management of fishing resources and support the local economy by promoting sales within the community.

In cases where fishermen have their equipment confiscated by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, the regulations provide for compensation. Fishermen affected by such actions will be reimbursed for the duration of their unemployment resulting from the confiscation of their equipment. This provision demonstrates an acknowledgment of the potential economic impact on fishermen and aims to mitigate any adverse effects on their livelihoods.

Additionally, a special committee will be established to address the compensation process for injured fishermen. Comprising key stakeholders such as Major General Saif Mohammad Al Zari Al Shamsi, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, Ali Ahmed Abu Ghazin, Chairman of the Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, and Muhammad bin Shahraan, President of the Kalba Fishermen’s Association, this committee will assess the circumstances of injured fishermen and propose suitable compensation measures. The recommendations put forth by the committee will undergo a thorough review process and require approval before implementation.

Overall, these fishing regulations underscore the commitment of the authorities to ensure the sustainable management of marine resources while safeguarding the interests and well-being of fishermen in Kalba. By establishing clear guidelines and mechanisms for compensation, the regulations aim to promote responsible fishing practices and support the livelihoods of those engaged in the fishing indust
